Where will the coast be?

An invitation to meditate on Oceans and coasts, offered by Agam Agenda.

Tomorrow, or ten years from now, you stand on the coast, facing the horizon. The sea and sand lap at your feet. How far do the tides go?

Can you tell what gets washed in and out with the saltwater? Do you hear the mangroves or the crabs entangled in the coastal harmony? The seagulls or the whales in the distance?

Waves rush into seawalls. When colonizers named islands, and enslaved peoples were shuttled between shores, how did the sea respond?

Stronger typhoons send us great floods. Again and again. How have we wrestled with the sea? How have we become it?

Dive in. The waters are warmer. The colors are bleaker. What lives in our coral reefs today? Where have the fish gone?

Are you standing on the coastline, or are you swimming in the deep waters?
