Merlie Alunan has received the Lillian Jerome Thornton Award for Nonfiction, the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Literature, and the National Book Award from the Manila Critics Circle. She is a writing fellow of the Silliman Univeristy National Summer Writers Workshop and the U.P. Creative Writing Center.
